Helene Richman will lead a workshop on how to create prints from local flowers. Join her in getting a bit of physical energy out – hello natural plant therapy with a hammer!

History of Plant Hammering: This technique of plant hammering is oftentimes cited or referred to and there exists an actual word in the Japanese language- ‘Tatakizome’‘Tatakizome’ たたき染め (combining words ‘Tataki’ -to beat- and ‘Zome’ -dyeing)

Plant hammering and pounding onto fabric and paper has had a place in many cultures worldwide historically in art and creative tradition. In North America, native artists practiced leaf pounding to adorn their tents. The Cherokee leaf pounding technique was adopted by quilters – particularly skilfully by whole cloth quilters in the 20th’s century.

About Helene Richman

For almost 35 years, I have brought passion about intelligent, forward-thinking design to my career as a product design and development leader in the children’s wear industry. I am intrigued by the question of how to deliver quality and innovative design in ways that contribute to the sustainability of the planet and actively seeks opportunities to partner with those interested in this goal. As a avid gardener, I became very interested in natural flower dyes and have been teaching myself how to create with nature.
