Paper Wings: A Tribute to the Writer & Activist Maureen Duffy
Presented by Alison Child in tribute to the novelist, playwright and poet Maureen Duffy who died in May we present ‘Paper Wings’ a multi-media performance of love poems, dedicated to Sappho and set to paper by Liz Mathews.
Maureen Duffy was a humanist and an activist, working for over 65 years, for LGBTQ+ rights, animal rights and campaigning for authors to be paid for their work.
She published the ground-breaking lesbian novel ‘The Microcosm’ in 1966 and her output includes many other acclaimed novels, plays and poems.
About Alison
Alison Child is an author and actor. In 2019 she worked alongside Tzeli Hajidimitriou to adapt Maureen Duffy’s short play ‘Sappho Singing’ for the screen.
‘Paper Wings’ acts as a companion piece to ‘Sappho Singing’, articulating lesbian desire through a deep connection with Nature, with the works of John Donne, Shakespeare and an eclectic range of other literary and artistic imagery.
