From Fitness to Empowering Others: A Journey into Teaching Self-Defense
Have you ever considered self-defence or kickboxing?
For me, it helped transform not only my physical well-being but also my mental health. I dipped my toes into the world of martial arts at the age of 22 when I joined a class for the first time. At the time, I was dealing with issues around low self-esteem, lack of confidence, and I guess the insecurities that come with being young. Someone suggested kickboxing might be the confidence booster I needed, and they turned out to be right.
While it wasn’t an overnight change, kickboxing became a catalyst that helped transform my personality over the course of two years. My confidence went up, self-esteem improved, and I found myself overcoming social anxiety. The physical benefits were also beginning to show—I felt stronger, fitter, and genuinely enjoyed the workouts. I started with 1-2 sessions a week, gradually increasing to 2-3 times a week.
One aspect that attracted me to the kickboxing community was the sense of family. The camaraderie within the club made it more than just a workout—it was a gathering of like-minded individuals supporting each other. Social events like dinners and fight nights further strengthened the bonds formed during training sessions.
Back then I was working full-time in a band, at some point I made the decision to transition from musician to fitness instructor, at the time mainly to make sure that I had a steady income. I quickly realised that I enjoyed getting fit while also helping others get fit too. Following two years of working in a health spa, I decided to become a self-employed personal trainer. Then an invitation from the main kickboxing coach to get involved in coaching sessions came just at the right time.
For me, teaching kickboxing isn’t just a job; it’s a way for me to share the incredible benefits I’ve experienced. Whether it’s improving mental health, fitness, or overall well-being, I believe kickboxing has something to offer everyone. Witnessing the positive changes in people after a session gives me a sense of purpose. I’m a big self-defence advocate, and I believe everyone should feel confident in their ability to protect themselves, in particular women who might sometimes feel like they wouldn’t be able to protect themselves.
I’m deeply passionate about this and for that reason, I regularly run kickboxing and self-defence workshops at the annual Sappho Women Festival every September. Regardless of nationality, ability, fitness level, age, or background, everyone is always welcome. The workshops focus on simple and effective techniques—quick to pick up and easy to remember. Empowering others with the knowledge of self-defence is immensely rewarding.
So, if you’re ever considering kickboxing or self-defence, I would say just go for it. It’s not just a sport; it’s a journey of self-discovery and empowerment too.
